Learning term

Process state — Users, permissions, and processes

Process state: The current scheduler state of a process, such as running, sleeping, or exited. This card shows its role in “Users, permissions, and processes” and a safe diagnostic path.

Users, permissions, and processesLevel 0–3

Orientation

Process state: The current scheduler state of a process, such as running, sleeping, or exited. At this level, separate purpose, input, and visible result. Place Process state within Users, permissions, and processes before changing settings or files.

Exercise

Try it safely

When a service cannot start or open a file, compare process identity, ownership, permissions, and limits relevant to Process state with the expected state. Open an isolated test environment and run “ps -eo pid, ppid, user, stat, cmd | head”. Write down the expected output first, do not alter production data, and record one safe next diagnostic step.

ps -eo pid,ppid,user,stat,cmd | head

Quick check

Can you explain the purpose, observable state, and most common failure source of Process state — Users, permissions, and processes in one sentence each? Which evidence would you preserve before changing anything, and which repeated test would prove that the correction actually worked?
