Learning term

umask — Files, paths, and directories

umask: A bit mask that removes default permissions when files are created. This card shows its role in “Files, paths, and directories” and a safe diagnostic path.

Files, paths, and directoriesLevel 0–3

Orientation

umask: A bit mask that removes default permissions when files are created. At this level, separate purpose, input, and visible result. Place umask within Files, paths, and directories before changing settings or files.

Exercise

Try it safely

When a program reports “file not found” or “permission denied”, use `pwd`, `ls -la`, and `stat` to determine the real path and metadata relevant to umask. Open an isolated test environment and run “pwd && ls -la /srv/example-app”. Write down the expected output first, do not alter production data, and record one safe next diagnostic step.

pwd && ls -la /srv/example-app

Quick check

Can you explain the purpose, observable state, and most common failure source of umask — Files, paths, and directories in one sentence each? Which evidence would you preserve before changing anything, and which repeated test would prove that the correction actually worked?
